Javairiah Fatima, MD, a Professor of Surgery, and a Distinguished Fellow of the Society of Vascular Surgery, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, serves as the Co-Director of the Complex Aortic Center at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. She serves as a member of the Board of Directors for American Board of Vascular Surgery, as well as the Chief Co-Editor of the Thoracic section of the Endovascular Today Journal. As a vascular surgeon, Dr. Fatima specializes in open and endovascular aortic surgeries, aortic dissections, and fenestrated aortic aneurysm repair surgery (FEVAR) for which she is the only woman amongst a handful of vascular surgeons who have FDA approval for an Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) to study the use of F/B-EVAR technology for complex thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms and dissections.
Dr. Fatima received her medical degree from The Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan. She then completed her residency in general surgery at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota, followed by a vascular surgery fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. After her fellowship, she went on to complete additional training at the Mayo Clinic for advanced thoracoabdominal fenestrated aortic therapies. Since focusing her attention on advancing branch and fenestrated graft technology, Dr. Fatima has been the principal investigator on more than 30 clinical trials, with many addressing branch graft and fenestrated technology and has published over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. In addition, she is well-known as a frequent invited speaker at national and international medical conferences, including various national societies for Vascular Surgery. She has served as an instructor, speaker, discussant, and moderator at more than 100 National and International symposia for Vascular Surgery. She has received many awards for scholarship, research, and clinical services.
